So much for numbers don't mean anything.
I remember reading a thing about numbers being kept off toots was deliberate, to encourage authentic interaction and not follow the herd, and it made me have a massive rethink about my use of social media and really feel positive about this place.
A directory based on numbers is pretty much the antithesis of that, esp if being used for new users to find people to follow.
Hackers is actually a perfect movie about computer science / "hacktivist" culture albeit accidentally. There's a lot of lofty liberal rhetoric about the march of technological progress being a net good to humanity (the hacker manifesto!) and democratizing society in a vague sense — meanwhile all the men characters believe that they are owed time and sex from women and relentlessly harass the one woman in their company.

casual abelism / a request Show more
i've been noticing an increase of casual abelism on the fediverse recently. Sometimes usage of oppressive language is used that really really gets to me and makes it hard to engage with toots and the fediverse at all for awhile.
I know many of these words are very ingrained in our culture and vocabulary, but it would mean a lot to me personally if we all were a bit more aware of our casual abelism and worked on it.
