Submissions welcome - please boost, I’d like to spread this through the #fediverse. Reach out if you have any questions!

@ricardojmendez For a microsecond I considered doing a submission to this, but then I check the reviewers and they all appear to be cryptocurrency people or libertarians. :thinkingghost:

@bob @ricardojmendez
I was going to ask where's the money coming from? Always follow-the-money.

@VeintePesos @bob It’s Samsung NEXT’s budget.

And if you are wondering about the motivation, I am being dead frank on that post. I think we, as an industry, should do more.

Hopefully my post history helps convince you, including the one about “supporting the random” (will look for the link).

@VeintePesos @bob Found it!

From over a year ago (six months before I joined NEXT):

I’m sure the message is recognizable.

Ok sure, I can't argue with those posts. I'm going a little off topic here, but the whole damn thing was setup and funded by DARPA--do I really trust them? I'm not calling you out specifically, just saying that we need to follow-the-money on these startups that seem all bunnies and birds to begin with only to find out 10 years later they've been harvesting our habits all that time and selling the info for profit to "undisclosed" customers.

@VeintePesos @bob Ah, sure. But we still get to build cool, private things on top of it.

Ever watch the Bob Redford movie "Sneakers". One of my favorites. It's actually pretty freakin old at this point.

Cosmo: There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!

Cosmo: The world isn't run by weapons anymore, or energy, or money. It's run by little ones and zeroes, little bits of data. It's all just electrons.

As developers as well as everyone else, we always need to keep this in mind. (are Cosmos's quotes 100% correct, probably not).

@VeintePesos @bob I have. I am old enough. 😊

All the more reason to support efforts furthering decentralization and privacy.

@ricardojmendez @bob
I'm all for it Ricardo. And even if you have all of us in mind, there are those that follow you and may leverage your work for evil. Hell, the content delivery networks are already somewhat de-centralized, with different Locale (languages) around the world (all kinds of fancy stuff they can do based on Locale). Who says decentralization is the panacea for privacy?

@VeintePesos

Thanks for reminding me about Sneakers. I loved that film as a kid!

(Hmm, maybe that explains my choice of PhD topic, futures of privacy protection)

@VeintePesos
Old hackers were about hacking servers. The newer, and more fearsome have, are those that can hack the human mind - using networks as intended, but manipulating facts and inventing new ones, pretending to be people they are not, exploiting the flaws in the human psyche.

Propaganda using social networks. That is the enemy we must fight.

@ricardojmendez @bob

@rick_777 @ricardojmendez@VeintePesos This isn't new. "Social engineering" has always been a subfield of hacking and it's arguably older than digital computers.
@bob @ricardojmendez @rick777 @veintepesos

Kevin Mitnick was the king, when it came to social engineering.

@bob
Yeah, but that was just too get access to computers. What we're seeing now is mass scale social engineering in order to have a direct political effect.

"Propaganda using social networks. That is the enemy we must fight."

Probably just one of many. Mastodon is a good start. There's also all the tracking and AI and munching and mashing all the big data they've collected over the years to market you (sell you) and monitor WTF you're doing for The Powers That Be (TPTB)

It' appears to be here already on Gargron's pet project. Getting followers from one server with one user with one post is a little too Spooky for me. I got 2-3 last night from EXACTLY these types. TPTB want to keep an eye on us. If you want to stay anonymous, then be anonymous here as anywhere else.
